At that time, they prayed for workers to help at the future orphanage and that is when they got the call to return and bring workers to finish the building project . The project was completed in 2013 and shortly after they started a nonprofit 501c3 called “Why Not You Ministry” to continue working in the San Antonio de Cortez area. In 2016 they were given a piece of land in Providencia and built a dorm there to run the Ministry out of. In 2017 they bought the blue house beside the dorm that was used as the kitchen and dining area. They were offered land across the road from the dorm and purchased that in 2018. They started building the upper dorm on that land in 2019 and moved into it in 2020. So, one of us sat with him to encourage reading. He read a book called “God, I need to talk to you about bad words.” He read the book and enjoyed it so much that he wanted to read more. At the end, he read 3 books! One of the girls who was sitting next to him reading a book observed how he was enjoying the reading. After the boy finished the book, she went right away to read his book. It’s beautiful to see the power of encouragement. On the next day, we saw the same boy coming back, and the first thing he wanted to do was read a book! Once everyone left the carpet area, I asked her again and she agreed. She went slow and sounded out each word, and I helped her with some, but after each page she would look at me with a huge smile. It was fun for me to give her encouragement and see her feel success. She spent 30 minutes reading, and she wanted to keep going. So, we started working on the scaffolding so we can finish the roof. It turns out that a pipe had broken, and the pump wasn't working. They checked the water level, which is at 200 feet, while the pump is at 300 feet. It's reassuring to know that we have plenty of water in the well, even after a very dry season. The stones to the right will be busted up by sledge hammers for foundations. And the tractor hit some rock on the back wall and we will spend time smashing away at that as well to level everything out! We will be building a pavilion (in between the soccer field and the playground) for both our activities, from church conferences to children programs or the use of local churches. In one of the areas where we have the program, Cordoncillos, there is an eight-year-old boy whose sister is part of the program, but he is not. Even so, this boy memorized all the verses from last year. His sister is older, so she is assigned longer and more challenging verses, while the younger children receive shorter ones. Yet, this little boy joyfully memorized the verses meant for the older kids. He gladly recited every verse to us, verses he learned simply because he wanted to. Getting an update from Naun, he told me that a few accepted Christ as their Savior and a few that rededicated their lives to Christ. They had people and businesses donate all the material but no one to help build it. On Monday, I went out to see her place. For the past year they have been living in a house where the back wall fell down, and the sheets and tin are a wall now. This wasn't much of a decision for us. Reina has been working with a 9-year-old girl in the sponsorship program who wasn't understanding simple math (e.g., adding and subtracting). After a few tutoring sessions, she was finally understanding and able to answer some problems. Reina said she couldn't stop smiling. Now they are teaching her how to read as well. It's those types of stories that make me excited. She is learning, but relationships are being built with children to open them up to the truths of the gospel. Eli told me the night before our sponsorship fun day that I was in charge of a group and needed to come up with games and activities for the whole day. We just finished a chicken coop for a family who lives in the "jungle" away from town and between her dogs and a wild cat, they haven't been able to keep chickens alive. The other family didn't have a bathroom and their wash station didn't have a roof over it, and since Hondurans loathe the sun and it rains a lot, now she has protection from both. They live in the Cordoncillos area already, Sunday morning they already have a children's program for about 70 kids and they already know a few of the children. Our next step is for a "Triunfo" sponsorship meeting at their place. Their house is right next to the church and they have a very nice place to hold the meetings. I am excited! A secondary mission is helping people work their way out of poverty. This man is a taxi driver and has been renting one for the past few years for $40 a week. I was able to find people who would help loan him money to buy his own, so this will be completely his in three years. Wish i could have talked with them about why they wear them, coming from a Mennonite background, it could have been an interesting conversation. I also learned there are many churches here called Jesus Solos, Just Jesus. They think we server 3 Gods, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, where they only serve one God, Jesus. And if i understood correctly they discourage studying the Bible and reading it. Very interesting. So, Tuesday we had 4-8 years old, Wed we had 9-10 years old and Thursday 12-17 years old. From games, to writing the sponsors, to bible stories, to food and singing, it was a great three days! Marvin, who has been helping with the farm work around the mission, mentioned he would like to learn to lay blocks, so we brought him to help with this project so he could start to learn. I am not sure if you would work for $10 a day digging through stone and then preaching that night. (On a side note, here in Providencia most are farmers and a normal day's wage is $4 to $8 dollars a day, so $10 is on the higher end for a day’s work.) This family is helping their parents build a house. They "celebrate" their Christmas in the evening/night of the 24th here. Eating tamales and of course coca cola. They do not get each other gifts or decorate, at least not up here on the hill. I thought it was going to take about 5 days. They moved everything for their grandparents' new house, which was about 50 yards away.
